Celebrating 60 years of Shakespeare at The George

In 2019 we celebrated our diamond jubilee – 60 years of performing open-air Shakespeare plays in the courtyard of The George Hotel in Huntingdon.

The centre-piece of our anniversary celebrations was the publication of a special full colour souvenir book packed with cast lists, pictures and audience memories of every show we’ve performed in the last 60 years.

It is a fascinating record of the history of the company, painstakingly researched and assembled by our archiving team of Lizzie Elliot and Jacquie Spencer, lead by John Shippey.  John and the team have spent many hundreds of hours in creating a magnificent and worthy celebration of 60 years of the company.

They did an incredible job and have produced a wonderful book packed with 130 pages of cast and crew lists, pictures and audience memories of every show we’ve performed at The George Hotel since 1959.

The 60th anniversary souvenir book details 507 performances, 51 separate productions and features a combined cast and crew of over 1,300 local actors, dancers, musicians, technicians and backstage support, not to mention the tens of thousands of audience members we’ve entertained over the years.

This beautifully illustrated and informative piece of local history is available to buy for just £10 and offers an opportunity to celebrate a unique Huntingdon institution (and perhaps to see how many of the shows you can remember watching!).
